West Meets East...
Both Valley Jazz Cooperative programs come together for the first time at The Nash on Sunday, May 14th for a special Mother’s Day matinee performance. This event will feature the debut of the West Valley Jazz Cooperative, an 11-piece ensemble. In addition, the East Valley Jazz Cooperative, a full 16-piece big band, will perform, returning to the site of its own debut appearance (in May 2016).
The West Valley Jazz Cooperative will open the program with compositions by such artists as Freddie Hubbard, Charles Mingus, and Shorty Rogers. After a brief intermission, the East Valley Jazz Cooperative will conclude the festivities with works by Lester Bowie, Duke Ellington, and John Scofield, among others. Each group of outstanding high school and junior high school students performs under the direction of Russell Schmidt. The Valley Jazz Cooperative program is an educational initiative of Music Serving the Word. To learn more about Valley Jazz Cooperative programs, please visit ValleyJazz.org
