VJCP540-FBB – Flexible Instrumentation Jazz Ensemble Chart, which has been written to sound complete with as few as 11 pieces or as many as a full (18-piece) big band. The instrumentation is as follows:
Alto Sax I, Alto Sax II, Tenor Sax I, Tenor Sax II (opt.), Baritone Sax (opt.)
Trumpet I, Trumpet II, Trumpet III, Trumpet IV (opt.)
Trombone I, Trombone II, Trombone III (opt.), Bass Trombone (IV) (opt.)
Guitar (opt.), Piano, Bass, Drums, Vibraphone (opt.)
Description: Originally composed by George & Ira Gershwin in the late 1920’s, Soon has become a much-performed and recorded songbook standard. In this new chart from arranger George Darrah, Soon gets a uniquely captivating treatment. There is great variety to be found in Darrah’s arrangement, as straight-ahead swing sections (reminiscent of Basie Band writing) are contrasted with lighter, breezier moments (hinting at a West Coast Jazz vibe). Solos are in the Alto Sax II and Trombone II books and can easily be moved to lead chairs, if necessary. Overall, this is a wonderfully buoyant chart on a great Gershwin classic that ensembles will find fun to play.
This big band arrangement is of intermediate difficulty.
