Description: As reimagined by Jhoely Garay, Silent Night maintains its inherently gentle and reverential character, even as transformed into a jazz waltz. Following an introduction that places the focus on the rhythm section, the old Christmas hymn is treated to creative yet subtle jazz reharmonizations. And the arranger’s deft orchestrational choices move the well-known melody around the band, creating an attractive variety.
After space for multiple soloists, an ensemble chorus leads back to the Head Out, which moves to a new key. This well-timed modulation offers up sounds that are fresh, yet familiar. A lovely pedal point device—used intermittently throughout Garay’s arrangement—returns at the very end, bringing Silent Night to a beautiful, peaceful close.
This big band arrangement is of intermediate difficulty.
