VJCP535-FBB – Flexible Instrumentation Jazz Ensemble Chart, which has been written to sound complete with as few as 12 pieces or as many as a full (18-piece) big band. The instrumentation is as follows:
Alto Sax I, Alto Sax II, Tenor Sax I, Tenor Sax II (opt.), Baritone Sax (opt.)
Trumpet I, Trumpet II, Trumpet III, Trumpet IV (opt.)
Trombone I, Trombone II, Trombone III (opt.), Bass Trombone (IV) (opt.)
Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums, Vibraphone (opt.)
Additional note from the publisher: While most flexible instrumentation releases from VJC Publications are written for as few as 11 performers, Olas is written for a minimum of 12 musicians. Envisioned from the creative outset as a guitar feature by the composer—a talented, highly-respected guitarist herself— this piece absolutely requires the presence of guitar in the ensemble for a successful performance.
Description: Olas is a groovy piece in straight eighths, inspired by the rhythm of a cha-cha-chá. It features guitar as the solo instrument. This piece combines traditional jazz progressions with modal harmonies. Drawing from the ebb and flow of ocean waves, it highlights the interplay between the horns and the rhythm section in a friendly and accessible manner, specially tailored for developing jazz musicians.
This big band arrangement is of intermediate difficulty.
Excerpted audio samples are provided for most pieces here at the VJC Store, while complete recordings of the vast majority of VJC Publications can be found on the VJC YouTube page.
Please note: The VJC will never pursue payment of synchronization rights from middle schools, junior high schools, high schools, community colleges, universities, all-state ensembles, church groups, or independent educational programs for young people related to the posting of recorded performances of this work on YouTube or other, similar sites (including social media platforms). While sharing the .pdf files is not permitted, sharing your musical performance online is.
