Description: In a beautiful, expressive arrangement from jazz guitarist/composer Tom Wolfe, the classic hymn O Come, O Come, Emmanuel is reimagined as a contemporary Bossa Nova. Following an atmospheric introduction, solo Piano (or opt. Guitar) sets up the groove with a lovely two-bar vamp; the rest of the big band soon joins in. A Flugelhorn soloist then states the melody, with the initial vamp returning between phrases, allowing the wonderful harmonies to linger unhurriedly.
There is an open section for various members of the band to have an opportunity to improvise, then the Flugelhorn soloist (in the Trumpet II chair) takes the final solo. After an exciting interlude, the melody comes back, first in the Bass, then in Alto Sax. After a rousing statement from the full ensemble, Trumpet II gets the final word on the melody, followed by a return of the vamp, concluding this arrangement’s beautiful, evocative, musical journey.
Tom Wolfe's fresh take on the Christmas hymn O Come, O Come, Emmanuel is certain to become standard programming on holiday concerts for many years to come.
This big band arrangement is of intermediate-to-advanced difficulty.
