VJCP542-FBB – Flexible Instrumentation Jazz Ensemble Chart, which has been written to sound complete with as few as 11 pieces or as many as a full (18-piece) big band. The instrumentation is as follows:

Trumpet I, Trumpet II, Trumpet III, Trumpet IV (opt.)
Trombone I, Trombone II, Trombone III (opt.), Bass Trombone (IV) (opt.)
Guitar (opt.), Piano, Bass, Drums, Vibraphone (opt.)
Description: Distant Memories, composed by legendary jazz pedagogue Ramon Ricker, offers a powerful musical journey, traversing through different moods and feels. After a reflective introduction that starts in the Piano, then moves to melodic statements from solo horn parts (supported by optional Guitar and Vibraphone), the chart builds momentum as the tempo picks up and the groove gets more established.
By the time the solo section arrives—with space for Tenor Sax and Trumpet soloists—that groove is highly energized. Because improvisation sections are “open”, there are opportunities for the ensemble director to expand the solo space to additional improvisers. And because these sections move between just two modal harmonies, that space can even be offered to more novice improvisers.
Following the solo section, an ensemble passage brings back numerous themes heard before. The brief codetta features a chorale-style approach, bringing Distant Memories to an evocative close.
This big band arrangement is of intermediate-to-advanced difficulty.
