Description: An introspective, meditative Bossa Nova from composer Russell Schmidt, Bossa ‘Round Here was originally written for the Penfield Commission Project. The piece has received a significant update in this new edition for VJC Publications, now allowing it to function seamlessly as either a flexible instrumentation chart or a work for full jazz ensemble.
The arrangement features a gentle, lyrical melody for the trumpet section, which contrasts with a more active, assertive melody for saxophones (in soli form) during the bridge. Following some tuneful, contrapuntal lines from the trombone section—against the returning trumpet melody—there is an ensemble send-off into the solo section (with space for either Alto Sax I or Tenor Sax I to improvise).
After the solo section, another contrapuntal passage leads into an abbreviated Head Out, with the now-familiar melody returning to the trumpet section a final time as the arrangement draws to a peaceful, satisfying close.
This big band arrangement is of intermediate difficulty.
